Worrying Over Spilled Oil…Again

The recent oil spills from three vessels, attributed to the effects of Typhoon Carina, could be the largest in Philippine history just from the spill alone of the largest vessel with almost 1.5 million liters of oil. Starting from Bataan, traces of the spills have already been seen in Bulacan and Cavite.

Beyond the cleanup and relief efforts, preventing future oil spills should be a priority. Maritime safety regulations should be better enforced and improved if needed; and oil tankers should be made more resilient to weather disturbances. Alternative sources of energy should also be mainstreamed to lessen the need for oil. Dependence on marine products for food should also be lessened to minimize displaced fisherfolk in case of another oil spill.
